Three Tips To Remove Smoke Odor From a Leather Jacket

Leather jackets tend to absorb smoke odors very quickly. Even non-smokers can find that their leather jackets reek of cigarette smoke if they spend time in a room with people who smoke. The leather is porous, which means that the smoke is trapped and held by every surface of the jacket. Removing cigarette smoke odor from a leather jacket does not require expensive treatments, however. The treatments that are the most effective utilize household products that most people already have at home.

A Fresh Air Treatment

The simplest and least expensive way to get rid of smoke odor is to hang the jacket in fresh air for a couple of days. This option may not be ideal if the weather is cold and the jacket needs to be worn. It is important that the jacket is protected from any wet weather, as well, which can limit the use of this treatment. If the conditions are right, however, the fresh air will replace the smoke quickly. Fresh air is especially effective for jackets that have only been exposed to smoky air for a short period of time. People who smoke while wearing a leather jacket may need to use more direct smoke removal methods.

Baking Soda Bag

The absorbent properties of baking soda make it the perfect ingredient for removing smoky odors. Put the jacket in a large trash bag. Insert a box of baking soda that has been opened. Seal the bag for one or two days to give the baking soda an opportunity to absorb the smoky odor. After a couple of days, open the bag and check to see if the smoke is gone. In most cases, the jacket will smell as good as new. If the smell is still detectable, close the bag for a few more days. It may help to replace the baking soda box with a fresh one after a few days if the odor is particularly strong at first.

Shaving Cream

Leather jackets are made from the treated skin of animals. They can be treated in ways that are similar to the way people would treat their own skin. Shaving cream is a convenient skin cleanser that can be placed directly in the area that needs to be cleaned. Use a small amount of shaving cream to wash all of the exterior areas of the leather jacket. Use a damp cloth to remove the shaving cream, being careful not to get the leather too wet.
