Many smokers consider a cigarette holder a fashion accessory but it also serves a practical purpose. Cigarette holders came into fashion in the early part of the 20th century when cigarettes were not filtered and individuals, especially women, didn’t want to have tobacco stains on their fingers. A cigarette holder, a tube designed to hold the cigarette at one end, enables the smoker to draw in smoke without lips or fingers touching the actual cigarette. It can be very simply designed using an economical plastic material or more ornate and stylish, created from bakelite, silver or other fine materials. Cigarette holders come in four lengths, cocktail length (up to 4 inches long), dinner length (up to 6 inches), theatre length (up to 14 inches) and the longest called the opera length (up to 20 inches).

In order to get the full benefit of using a cigarette holder, it’s important to learn the proper way to smoke a cigarette with a cigarette holder. First, make sure that there is no dirt or tobacco debris inside that would restrict air flow through the mouthpiece. A pipe cleaner is a good device for cleaning a cigarette holder prior to inserting the cigarette.

DID YOU KNOW

Cigarette holders were considered an essential part of ladies’ fashion from the mid-1910s through the early-1970s, and are still widely popular accessories in many aspects of Japanese fashion.

Firmly grasp the cigarette by the filter tip and insert it gently into the holder, twisting slightly so that it locks into place. Don’t try to cram, squeeze or otherwise force the filter end into the opening or you risk breaking the cigarette or pinching the filter so severely that you won’t be able to draw air through it to smoke.

Most smokers point the cigarette holder in a slightly upwards direction while smoking and are careful not to let any ash accumulate and fall on the ground. Don’t wave the holder around or you risk dislodging the lit cigarette. When finished smoking, stub out the butt and carefully twist the filter tip to remove it from the holder and dispose of the butt, being careful not to exert any pressure that would cause the tip to get stuck inside the holder.

Keep the cigarette holder safely stored away when not in use and out of the hands of pets or children because it is not a toy. At least once a week, use a pipe cleaner to clean the holder to make sure that any accumulated tar or other debris has been cleared away so that when you insert your next cigarette, you’ll get the pleasure of a smooth and satisfying draw.

If you have made the decision to quit smoking cigarettes, you’ve already taken the most difficult step. Quitting smoking improves the quality and length of life. Once you decide to quit, you may find yourself faltering occasionally. This will typically happen when you are near others who smoke. You can move beyond this obstacle if you know what to expect.

Quitting takes a strong, lifetime commitment. If you want to be steadfast in your vow to quit, take a firm stand on your opinions. A successful quitter makes a plan and defends it. Begin your plan by acknowledging that you might be alone in your fight. The rest of the world may not share your view, and they may try to tempt you into changing it. Once you prepare yourself for the solitude, you can build your resolve. Take a look at the withdraw symptoms and how to handle them.

DID YOU KNOW

Quitting smoking saves money. A pack-a-day smoker, who pays $2 per pack, can expect to save more than $700 per year. It appears that the price of cigarettes will continue to rise in coming years, as will the financial rewards of quitting.

Before you attempt to quit, speak to all the smokers in your life. Search for support and give yourself an excess of solid reasons why quitting is important. If you give them clear facts, you may convince them to quit as well. Try to find other quitters and make a pact together. Having an ally will help you feel less alone. Ask your spouse, family, and friends to respect your decision by not smoking around you. When that’s impossible, find a place you can escape to when they smoke. Distract yourself with a hobby during these moments.

After asking for support, discuss changing your social calendar. Instead of going to a smoke filled bar, find a restaurant or pub that prohibits smoking. Avoid doing activities that are linked to the habit. If you smoked over morning coffee with a friend, plan to meet for lunch at the park instead. In the workplace, ask to be moved to a smoke-free area. Place an air filter in your work area. Put one in your home as well, and do a thorough cleaning of furniture and carpets.

If you can’t avoid being near smokers, consider buying smokeless cigarettes. They are harmless and can slowly ease you into quitting. Try chewing gum to curb your cravings. Practice deep breathing when you get the impulse to light up. If you get a strong urge, put it off for five minutes at a time. Visualize the benefits of being a non smoker. Each time you decide not to smoke, reward yourself. Quitting smoking is challenging when you do it alone, but it isn’t impossible.

Leather jackets tend to absorb smoke odors very quickly. Even non-smokers can find that their leather jackets reek of cigarette smoke if they spend time in a room with people who smoke. The leather is porous, which means that the smoke is trapped and held by every surface of the jacket. Removing cigarette smoke odor from a leather jacket does not require expensive treatments, however. The treatments that are the most effective utilize household products that most people already have at home.

A Fresh Air Treatment

The simplest and least expensive way to get rid of smoke odor is to hang the jacket in fresh air for a couple of days. This option may not be ideal if the weather is cold and the jacket needs to be worn. It is important that the jacket is protected from any wet weather, as well, which can limit the use of this treatment. If the conditions are right, however, the fresh air will replace the smoke quickly. Fresh air is especially effective for jackets that have only been exposed to smoky air for a short period of time. People who smoke while wearing a leather jacket may need to use more direct smoke removal methods.

Baking Soda Bag

The absorbent properties of baking soda make it the perfect ingredient for removing smoky odors. Put the jacket in a large trash bag. Insert a box of baking soda that has been opened. Seal the bag for one or two days to give the baking soda an opportunity to absorb the smoky odor. After a couple of days, open the bag and check to see if the smoke is gone. In most cases, the jacket will smell as good as new. If the smell is still detectable, close the bag for a few more days. It may help to replace the baking soda box with a fresh one after a few days if the odor is particularly strong at first.

Shaving Cream

Leather jackets are made from the treated skin of animals. They can be treated in ways that are similar to the way people would treat their own skin. Shaving cream is a convenient skin cleanser that can be placed directly in the area that needs to be cleaned. Use a small amount of shaving cream to wash all of the exterior areas of the leather jacket. Use a damp cloth to remove the shaving cream, being careful not to get the leather too wet.
